What to expect during your appointment:

The doctor-patient relationship must be that of trust and partnership. During the visits, you will receive a thorough medical evaluation, using a holistic approach. This includes:

  1. A comprehensive medical history of the current illness, associated factors, your own history and family history, and other risk assessments: genetic, environmental, lifestyle, stressors, etc.
  2. In depth physical examination such as cardiovascular, respiratory, abdominal, neurological exam, ear/nose/throat, etc.
  3. Ordering any necessary diagnostic testing: including blood work or diagnostic imaging. In addition to the conventional tests, naturopathic doctors may order more comprehensive tests to take a preventative approach. One example would be that in addition to checking blood glucose levels, insulin levels are checked to screen for pre-diabetes. Other specialized tests may be considered.
  4. Medical diagnosis:  Using all of the information above to arrive at a careful and accurate diagnosis, and of areas that need to be addressed.
  5. Treatment:  The most important aspect involves identifying and treating the root cause of the problem, and treating the whole person rather that just the disease or its symptoms.  Many times if a patient has multiple symptoms, their family doctor may refer them to various specialists (e.g. neurologist, gastroenterologist, rheumatologist, or psychiatris, etc), to address that particular system of the body where the symptom is arising from. While specialists serve a vital role in health care, it is important to treat the whole person rather than isolating body systems.  Naturopathic doctors recognize the level of complexity and a need for referral should there be an emergency situation, or necessity for further evaluation by a specialist. However in many cases, especially chronic conditions, a holistic approach is essential for healing. We will discuss a safe and effective natural treatment plan, unique to your care. This includes modalities such as clinical nutrition with whole foods diet and supplemental nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, and other lifestyle therapies, along with removing obstacles to cure, thereby allowing your body to heal itself.
