What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are primary care providers and attend a four year, post-graduate Naturopathic Medical School. They use scientific lab testing and imaging to diagnose medical conditions, while addressing symptoms at its root cause. Taking the time to build relationships with patients is an essential part of healing. Treatments are determined according to the needs of the individual.

The scope of practice for NDs include clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, classical homeopathy, physical and clinical diagnosis, laboratory and diagnostic imaging, counseling,  physical medicine, and minor surgery. NDs are an essential part of the health care system and work as a team with other health care practitioners, referring when appropriate.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct system of primary healthcare that looks beyond symptoms to the root cause of disease. It blends effective centuries-old natural therapies with modern scientific advancements, toward a safe and holistic approach to health and wellness. Naturopathic Medicine offers a range of care, from prenatal to geriatrics.

Many terms such as alternative medicine, integrative medicine, holistic medicine, complementary medicine, mind/body healing, and naturopathy have been used interchangeably. In essence, what defines naturopathic medicine is its principles and philosophies:

  1. Identify and remove the underlying causes(s) of disease
  2. Recognize the healing power of nature
  3. Utilize safe and effective natural treatments
  4. Treat the whole person: mind/body/spirit, and not the symptoms of disease
  5. Educate patients: doctor as teacher
  6. Emphasize prevention
